Air Pollution Control

Clearstone Engineering provides complete engineering solutions for controlling emissions of CH4, CO2, VOCs, BTEX, NOx, SO2, H2S, mercaptans, particulate matter, and air toxics by the energy industry. This includes engineering, procurement, construction management and supervision and commissioning services for monitoring and controlling emissions. Our key areas of expertise are as follows:

Vapour Control

Clearstone provides complete vapour recovery and control systems for small production facilities through to major tank farms at pipeline terminals. We advise clients on the various options suited to their particular circumstances, trouble shoot and de-bottleneck existing systems, and develop and implement custom solutions as required. Our capabilities include the following:

Performance Evaluation of Vapour Recovery Systems
We conduct full inspections of vapour recovery systems, including rigorous technical reviews and testing, to determine system performance and identify any bottlenecks.
System Safeguarding Reviews
Clearstone routinely conducts system-safeguarding reviews for our own design projects and is often retained to provide reviews of other systems. Moreover, we authored guidelines for designing safe vapour control systems for tanks, process sewers, API separators, dissolved air floatation separators, atmospheric and low-pressure vessels, as well as product transfer and loading systems for a major multinational oil and gas company.
Inspection and Upgrading of Floating Roof Systems
We manage projects to de-gas and clean large petroleum storage tanks, and to select and install improved sealing systems on floating roofs. Moreover, we design and install vapour control systems on both fixed-roof and floating-roof storage tanks.
Design and Supply of Turn-key Vapour Control Systems
We design custom vapour collection and control systems to suit a customer's specific needs, and offer complete turn-key systems.

Odour Control

Clearstone is a leading authority on the assessment and control of odours from oil and gas facilities. We are often asked to provide expert evidence in regulatory and mediation hearings to help resolve odour disputes, and identify practicable solutions. Most recently we prepared a background report on odour assessment and control as the first step in a multi-stakeholder process to develop objective regulatory standards for odour control. Our specific capabilities are as follows:

Source Characterization
We employ specialized sampling techniques, operational audits, and modeling methods to quantify odourous emissions at the source, and to determine the variations in these emissions.
Control-option Studies
We routinely conduct control-option studies to advise clients of the various control options available for their application, and to assist them in selecting the best solution for their circumstances. The solutions may range from simple changes in operating practices to the need for treatment or abatement systems.
Performance of Root-cause Analyses
Often there are multiple sources that may potentially contribute to a given odour problem. In these cases we will conduct a rigorous root-cause analysis to identify the key sources that need to be controlled and the level of control that is required to eliminate odour episodes.
Design and Supply of Odour Abatement Systems
Clearstone designs and builds a variety of different types of odour treatment and abatement systems (i.e., from adsorption and chemical treatment methods through to thermal oxidation).

BTEX Control for Glycol Dehydrators

Clearstone offers a selection of proven control technologies for reducing BTEX emissions from glycol dehydrators including condensers, waste gas oxidizers, and process optimization techniques.

Vent, Blowdown and Flare System Design

Clearstone developed the Canadian oil and gas industry's best management practices for solution gas flaring, and designs vent, flare and blowdown systems for a wide range of applications including upstream oil and gas facilities through to ultra high-pressure gas transmissions facilities.
