Clearstone has been involved in corporate, national and international climate change initiatives related to the energy sector for almost 20 years. We have worked with energy companies, industry associations and government agencies to quantify GHG emissions, develop emission factors and manuals for estimating emissions, and identify and evaluate reduction opportunities. Clearstone has also provided due diligence reviews, emissions monitoring and technical support for JI and CDM projects.

Clearstone provides services for estimating baseline and annual GHG emissions using rigorous bottom-up methods, and for quantifying the uncertainty in these estimates in accordance with IPCC Good Practice Guidance. We also provide comprehensive measurement services to establish baseline emissions, identify and evaluate emission reduction opportunities, and verify reduction claims. Our measurement services are designed to establish emissions from fugitive equipment leaks, combustion sources, venting and flaring, storage tanks, land farms and tailings ponds.

Additionally, we prepare annual GHG reports and verification services in response to provincial and federal regulations for a wide range of oil and gas companies. Our experience in this regard has included:

  • Measurement and reporting of GHG emissions for a major natural gas system in China resulting in the first grant awarded in this region by the Global Environmental Facility to fund related GHG reduction initiatives.

  • Emission monitoring services for a JI project between Canadian and Russian companies.

  • Third-party verification of corporate GHG emission inventories.

  • Comprehensive facility audits to identify significant cost-effective GHG emission reduction opportunities at oil and gas facilities in 9 different countries.

Emission Reduction Potential Studies
We provide technical reviews and full site-wide surveys to identify and evaluate emission reduction opportunities at industrial facilities. With our strong process engineering capabilities and working knowledge of the energy sector, we are able to consider all types of related GHG reduction opportunities and propose practicable solutions.

The types of control opportunities we identify and evaluate include:

  • Management of fugitive equipment leaks.

  • Performance evaluation and optimization of engines, heaters, boilers, heat exchangers, compressors, dehydrators, flares, incinerators and vapour recovery systems.

  • Waste gas recovery and utilization.

  • Process optimization.

  • Energy management.

We offer custom-tailored training services to increase employee awareness of climate change issues, GHG emission assessment and reporting methods, measurement methods, and control opportunities.
